In 2020, at the age of 24, Joseph Broad’s life took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. “It completely changed my life,” Joseph shares.

The daily challenge of managing diabetes sparked an idea, especially when he discovered the inefficiency of pre-filled insulin injection pens in warm temperatures. The Novocaddy is an innovative cooling case for insulin pens that connects to a phone app for real-time temperature monitoring and efficiency data.

Joseph’s entrepreneurial journey began with previous attempts at e-commerce businesses. “I’ve always believed that I have an entrepreneurial mindset and that problems are not stop signs but guidelines. I hope to use the problem of being diagnosed with diabetes to do something positive with my life and help others along the way.”

The drive to create a solution for himself and millions of others with diabetes led him to the UKSPF-funded Thrive Telford Business Start-Up Service.

“The 1 to 1 mentoring has been the most supportive aspect of the service,” Joseph said. Mentors Nigel and Tim shared knowledge on IP protection, patents and exploring international markets. Their guidance broadened Joseph’s perspective on opportunities and clarified milestones for success.

With the help of the Business Start-Up Service, Joseph plans to secure grant funding for product development. He has also enrolled on Innovate Telford for additional support, particularly in protecting his product.

Joseph’s journey with Novocaddy shows the power of an entrepreneurial spirit with the right support,” says Tim from the Business Start-Up Service. We are proud to be part of his success story, helping him turn his challenge into an innovative solution for others.”
